Less than one month to apply for Ohio two-stage ditch grant

Applicants have until Nov. 30 to apply for a grant program in Ohio for the construction of two-stage ditches.
The $5 million grant program, first announced by Ohio governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Agriculture in August, is part of an effort to incentivize producers to adopt and implement proven conservation practices to reduce nutrient runoff and improve water quality. This is part of the H2Ohio program, a water quality initiative launched by DeWine in 2019 in an effort to address water quality issues in the Ohio area. To date, two-stage ditches are the eighth BMP offered through the H2Ohio intensive program.
The program is available in the 24 counties in the Western Lake Erie Basin. Soil and water conservation districts and county engineers are eligible to apply for up to full reimbursement of the two-stage ditch construction.
“Two stage ditches are an important technology that reestablishes the natural floodplain area, which lowers flood risk and increases water quality,” said Lucas County engineer Mike Pniewski in a statement. “H2Ohio’s investment will improve the quality of life for those in the Maumee River Watershed.”
Applications for the grant program will be mailed directly to SWCDs and county engineer offices by Nov. 30.
